How to Make Your Classroom Queer Inclusive

Below you will find a list of suggestions on how to make your classroom a more queer inclusive space. Mouse over each suggestion to see an explanation.

  • Use gender neutral terms to refer to your students (instead of boys and girls say students, class etc)

  • Use gender neutral terms to refer to people outside of the class (partner/significant other instead of boyfriend/girlfriend)

  • Default to gender neutral pronouns (they), unless you know the pronouns of a specific person you are referring to

  • Do not use gender as a determining factor when making groups

  • Include queer examples and resources in your class

  • Include information on gender and sexual identity in sex education and biology classes

  • Acknowledge sexual and gender identity when applicable

  • Do not make assumptions about your students

  • Talk to your students
